Jim's specialty is carving birds in a style called fan-carving.
The entire bird is carved from a single, continuous piece of
wood yet the bird has wings and a tail, made from thin slices
of wood that remain attached to the bird's body. With fifty years
of carving experience, Jim's fascination has been with birds,
of which he carves over three dozen different birds native to
Minnesota.
His booth is a large enclosed umbrella from which many birds
hang, and Jim demonstrates his fan-carving technique
from his workbench in the center of the umbrella. A longtime
resident near Powerhorn Park, he teaches a carving class twice
a month at the Powerhorn community center.
